Science Overview
Science in EYFS
At St Werburgh’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that early years science should be a hands-on, curiosity-driven experience. Our children explore the world around them through their senses, using both natural and manufactured materials to compare, contrast, and discover. We encourage them to observe and talk about living things, and to ask questions about how things work and why things happen. Through playful, engaging activities, our pupils develop key scientific skills such as observing, predicting, and problem-solving, while exploring concepts like material properties, forces, and the life cycles of plants and animals.
Science in KS1 and KS2
Our programme of study in Science aims to develop enquiring minds and foster a deep understanding of scientific ideas, processes and skills, linking these to real-world experiences. Using White Rose Science, we ensure quality-first teaching that builds knowledge and understanding through small, carefully sequenced steps, supporting all children to make meaningful progress.
Through a clear progression of vocabulary and topics, children develop the language and conceptual understanding needed to think and work scientifically. They are encouraged, in a variety of contexts, to ask questions, plan and carry out investigations safely, and think creatively to make sense of the world around them.
We also embed sustainability within our science curriculum, helping children appreciate the importance of caring for our planet and understanding their role in looking after the wider world. Learning is further enhanced and enriched through links with the local community, drawing on its expertise and opportunities to bring science to life.
