Foundation Stage

Foundation Stage

At St Werburgh’s we have three classes that make up our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision. All classes have a teacher who leads the learning and teaching assistants who support the learning.

Nursery- 2 Year Olds

Foundation 1- 3 Year Olds

Foundation 2- 4 Year Olds

Our EYFS curriculum has been carefully designed to meet the developmental needs of our youngest learners while laying strong foundations for future success- ensuring all children are ‘Year 1 ready’. It provides a balance of child-led and adult-guided learning, rooted in the Prime and Specific Areas of learning, and enriched by our Catholic identity.

We place particular emphasis on:

  • Communication and Language: Creating a language-rich environment where children express themselves confidently and develop the vocabulary to engage with others and the wider world.

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Instilling Gospel values such as kindness, forgiveness, and empathy, helping children form positive, respectful relationships and a secure sense of self.

  • Physical Development: Promoting health, wellbeing, and gross and fine motor skills to support independence and readiness for learning.

From the earliest age, children are introduced to key stories from the Bible, daily prayer, and opportunities for spiritual reflection. This helps to form a moral compass and fosters a deep sense of awe and wonder about God’s creation.

Behaviour and Attitudes

Children are encouraged to become responsible, compassionate individuals who show respect for others and for the world around them. Our routines and interactions model positive behaviour, and we actively promote perseverance, cooperation, and gratitude. Children are supported in making good choices, rooted in our Catholic understanding of human dignity and the teachings of Christ.

Personal Development

At St. Werburgh’s, we are committed to the holistic development of every child – spiritually, morally, socially, emotionally, and culturally. Our curriculum provides wide-ranging opportunities for children to explore faith, celebrate diversity, engage with the wider community, and develop a sense of stewardship for God’s world.

We also support children in becoming confident, resilient learners who can take risks, express their thoughts and feelings, and develop self-regulation and a growth mindset from an early age.

Parent Partnership

We work in close partnership with our parents – the first educators of their children – as well as the parish and other community stakeholders, to provide consistent, compassionate care and support. We offer a range of parent classes and regularly invite parents into school to work alongside their children.

All staff are committed to ensuring the curriculum remains responsive, inclusive, and ambitious for all learners.
