Maths Overview
Maths in the EYFS
At St Werburgh’s Catholic Primary School, maths in the Early Years Foundation Stage is about developing early numeracy, problem-solving, and reasoning skills through play, hands-on experiences, and everyday routines. Our children build a strong foundation in counting, understanding numbers up to 10, recognising shapes, and exploring space and measurement. We aim to foster a positive and confident attitude towards mathematics, helping every child to develop a love of learning and the essential skills needed for future success. We use White Rose Maths scheme of learning to support our quality first teaching in the Early Years. As well as introducing the children to Mastering Number, which focuses on fluency in maths.
Maths in KS1 and KS2
Our programme of study in Mathematics aims to develop confident, fluent and enthusiastic learners who enjoy exploring and understanding the world through numbers and patterns. Using the White Rose Maths programme, we provide quality-first teaching built on carefully sequenced small steps that enable all children to develop deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts.
Throughout St Werburgh’s Cathloic Primary School, children learn through practical, hands-on experiences, using and comparing numbers and quantities to build strong early number sense. The Mastering Number programme further supports this by providing short, focused sessions that develop fluency, recall of key number facts, and the ability to make connections between new and prior learning.
Throughout the school, we use a range of concrete and visual resources to help children understand abstract ideas, moving them confidently from exploration to mastery. Regular opportunities are provided for children to apply their skills in problem-solving and reasoning, both within mathematics and across the wider curriculum.
Children are encouraged to work collaboratively, explain their thinking, and learn from one another. The learning of number facts and times tables “by heart” is seen as essential, and we support this through regular practice and home learning on Sumdog. Stimulating and engaging resources help present mathematics as an enjoyable, meaningful and creative subject where every child can experience success.
